Little known fact: Arielle, our Kojima assistant, has worked for an arts collective in Matènwa, Haiti for the past six years! She travels to Haiti several times a year to work side-by-side with these incredible artists. The forty-three "Atis Fanm," or Women Artists, specialize in traditional and non-traditional forms of artwork, including embroidery, scarf painting, printing, painting, and scratchboard. All artwork is by by hand in rural conditions so no two are exactly alike and many pieces exhibit handmade imperfections.
When, decades back, the manufacture of cheap clothing took over Haitian industry, women as well as men worked the factories. There many learned to hand-embroider details and embellishments on fabric and passed the skill down to their daughters. The Atis Fanm took those basic skills used once to decorate simple hems and expanded them into bold, picturesque images of everyday life. The artists embroider pillow shams and bright handbags as well as frame-able art.ID#AFM03/KDJ360
