YES, \"stick pearls\" as they are known in the business originated in Lake Biwa! After the small \"cottage industry\" in Lake Biwa was no longer producing pearls, the technique used to produce \"tissue nucleated\" pearls was brought to China and gave rise to a MASSIVE industry which flooded the market with \"odd\" shape pearls. With no other widely used names for this weird shapes, the Chinese pearl producers just called them \"biwa\" (despite it being an obvious misnomer, it is still widely used as a term to describe odd shape Chinese fresh water pearls). This necklace is one of the few examples I have ever seen of ACTUAL \"stick pearls\" from Lake Biwa, Japan. The pearls measure 7x19 - 9x18mm. Each pearl is hand knotted on white thread and the necklace is finished with a hand made (original) clasp in 18K white gold.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlways a fan of the unusual, Rudolf Voll (Pacific Pearls) and family started collecting cultured Japanese freshwater pearls some 50 years ago.
