Authentic Japan Kasumi Pearls from Lake Kasumi-ga-Ura

Authentic Japan Kasumi pearls are rare freshwater cultured pearls grown only in Lake Kasumi‑ga‑Ura, Japan. Because of their limited production, heritage, and provenance, they command a premium among collectors and jewelry connoisseurs.

What Are Japan Kasumi Pearls?

Japan Kasumi pearls are among the most distinctive freshwater cultured pearls in the world, grown in the storied waters of Lake Kasumi-ga-Ura, Japan. Produced in limited quantities, each pearl reveals its own spirit. Most often they are baroque and have a phenomenal metallic luster.

No two are alike. Shades of rose, lavender, champagne, and soft iridescence occur naturally, giving these pearls depth and personality that cannot be replicated. Their subtle surface textures and luminous overtones are the result of patient, time honored cultivation and the unique environment of Lake Kasumi-ga-Ura.

Authentic Japan Kasumi pearls are treasured not for perfection, but for individuality — making them especially prized by collectors who value rarity, provenance, and character.

Authentic Japan Kasumi pearls are cultivated exclusively in Lake Kasumi-ga-Ura, Japan.

Lake Kasumi-ga-Ura, Japan is a historic freshwater pearl region renowned for its careful, traditional farming methods. Once the home to over fifty companies in the business of fresh water pearl cultivation, there is currently only one farmer still carrying on this tradition. His name is Kiyoshi Yoneguchi. Because these pearls are produced in limited quantities and selected for quality at every stage, they remain a rare and highly prized treasure for collectors and jewelry enthusiasts.

How to Identify Authentic Japan Kasumi Pearls

While Japan Kasumi pearls share similar colors, luster, and baroque shapes with other freshwater pearls farmed in China, their true distinction lies in where they are cultivated. Authentic Japan Kasumi pearls are grown exclusively in Lake Kasumi-ga-Ura, Japan, a historic freshwater pearl region with unique water conditions and traditional farming techniques that cannot be replicated elsewhere.

Only pearls from Lake Kasumi-ga-Ura can rightfully bear the Kasumi name. The lake’s specific environment — its mineral composition, water flow, and climate — produces pearls with subtle qualities that define authenticity and rarity.

For collectors and jewelry enthusiasts, this means that provenance is the ultimate mark of a true Japan Kasumi pearl. When sourcing Kasumi pearls, always look for documentation or sourcing that confirms they come directly from Lake Kasumi-ga-Ura.

Why Authentic Japan Kasumi Pearls Command Higher Prices

Because Japan Kasumi pearls are cultivated exclusively in Lake Kasumi-ga-Ura, Japan, production is extremely limited. This scarcity, combined with decades of traditional cultivation expertise, naturally results in a higher price point than freshwater pearls produced elsewhere.

While Chinese freshwater pearls may appear visually similar in color and shape, they are mass-produced and widely available, which keeps their prices much lower. In contrast, authentic Japan Kasumi pearls are rare, meticulously selected, and carry the heritage and provenance of the original Japanese farming region.

For collectors and jewelry enthusiasts, paying a premium ensures the pearl is truly from Lake Kasumi-ga-Ura and represents an investment in both rarity and authenticity.

Our 30+ Years Working Directly with Lake Kasumi‑ga‑Ura Farmers

For over three decades, we’ve traveled regularly to Lake Kasumi‑ga‑Ura in Japan — the only place authentic Japan Kasumi pearls are cultivated — to work directly with the small number of farmers who keep this rare freshwater pearl tradition alive. In a pearl world where most production moved overseas or expanded into mass markets, the Kasumi‑ga‑Ura region remained a tiny, persevering enclave of pearl cultivation, supported by a handful of dedicated growers.

We first began importing Japan Kasumi pearls in the mid‑1990s, long before they were widely recognized in the United States. Since that time, we’ve forged deep relationships with producers, selecting each harvest in person and ensuring that every strand reflects true origin, quality, and the heritage of the lake itself.

Over the years we’ve witnessed environmental challenges, shifts in production, and the slow disappearance of many small farms — a testament to how rare genuine Japan Kasumi pearls have become. It’s been our privilege not just to source these pearls, but to document their story, honor the craft, and bring their legacy to collectors worldwide.

Are Japan Kasumi pearls treated or dyed?

NO: Japan Kasumi pearls are gently rubbed with salt after harvest to loosen any organic matter, they are then rinsed with fresh water. NEVER any treatment or dying of these pearls!

How do Kasumi pearls differ from Chinese freshwater pearls?

Provenance and history! Both are cultivated in a hybrid mussel (hyriopsis cumingii and hyriopsis schlegelii), the hybrid was actually introduced by Japanese fresh water pearl farmers. The colors and shapes of these two types of pearls are very similar. Japan Kasumi pearls are a VERY small on non invasive production, cultivated in accordance with their natural environment, no fertilizers or growth enhancements are used in their production. It is a slow process, where every step is done by hand.

Why do Kasumi pearls cost more?

Authentic Japan Kasumi pearls are the product of time, tradition, and an exceptionally rare environment. Unlike mass-produced freshwater pearls, they are grown exclusively in Lake Kasumi‑ga‑Ura, Japan, where decades of careful cultivation, meticulous selection, and the lake’s unique waters combine to create each pearl’s subtle, natural beauty.

Every pearl is individually nurtured, harvested in limited quantities, and selected for both quality and provenance. This rarity, coupled with the heritage of Japanese pearl farming and the decades-long relationships required to source them directly, makes each Japan Kasumi pearl a one-of-a-kind treasure — a reflection of craft, history, and authenticity that cannot be replicated elsewhere.
